Richie Incognito sent Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin threatening, racially-charged texts and voicemails: report
According to Fox Sports, the team and the NFLPA have been informed that Incognito, once known as one of the league's dirtiest players, sent the menacing messages, which will be shared with the league for its investigation.
Practical jokes and pranks are part of the culture in NFL locker rooms, but the Dolphins appear to be dealing with something a lot more serious after suspending guard Richie Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team for his alleged treatment of teammate Jonathan Martin.
It was being portrayed as a case of Incognito bullying Martin, a second-year offensive tackle, but it went to a different level Monday when Fox Sports reported that the Dolphins and the NFL Player Association were informed that Incognito sent Martin, who is biracial, text messages and left him voicemails that are threatening and racially charged.
According to CBS Sports, Incognito referred to Martin as a “half n-----,” made references to harming Martin’s family and defecating in Martin’s mouth.
Clearly, this takes the situation to an even more serious level.
The Dolphins said in a statement Sunday night that "we reached out to the NFL to conduct an objective and thorough review. We will continue to work with the league on this matter."
Last week, Martin apparently was put off when he sat down at the lunch table and the other players got up to leave. Then it was reported that Incognito had previously pressured Martin into contributing $15,000 for a player trip to Las Vegas that Martin elected not to attend.
Martin left the team last week after the lunch room incident. In a series of statements on Sunday morning, the Dolphins said, "The notion of bullying is based on speculation and has not been presented to us as a concern from Jonathan or anyone else internally." They also said. "Our primary concern for Jonathan is his overall health and well-being."
About eight hours later, the team said, "We received notification today from Jonathan's representation about allegations of player misconduct. We are taking these allegations very seriously and plan to review the matter further."
They added, "As an organization, we are committed to a culture of team-first accountability and respect for one another."
Then at 11:37 on Sunday night then sent out a statement, "The Miami Dolphins have suspended Richie Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team. We believe in maintaining a culture of respect for one another and as a result we believe this decision is in the best interest of the organization at this time."
It's uncertain if and when Martin will return to the Dolphins. There is no indication about Incognito's future with the team. Last week the Dolphins listed Martin as being out of the game against the Bengals with an illness.
There have also been reports that young players on the Dolphins have been pressure to pay a lot of money to finance the social outings of veteran players.
Incognito, 30, was born in Englewood, N.J., and went to high school in Arizona. He was drafted by the Rams in 2005, joined the Bills for one season in 2009 and has been with the Dolphins since 2010. When he was with the Rams, he was known as one of the dirtiest players in the league. He was voted this year by teammates to be a member of the Dolphins player council.
